Although there is some overlap between the two fields, there are some key differences between cosmetic and family dentistry in terms of who they serve and what treatments and procedures they provide. Generally, family dentistry is concerned with a wide range of treatments and procedures focused upon maintaining the oral health of the entire family, including education. Cosmetic dentistry is mainly focused on procedures that enhance the appearance of teeth and your smile.

Some common family dentistry procedures include:

  • Dental exams and cleanings
  • Dental fillings and crowns
  • Pediatric dental sealants

Some cosmetic dentistry procedures are:

  • Professional teeth whitening
  • Dental implants
  • Porcelain veneers

Dental Exams and Cleanings

A dental exam normally takes place before a cleaning, and involves a visual inspection of the mouth, gums and teeth. If any problems are detected, your dentist may be called in for a closer look.

The presence of plaque and tartar on your teeth can eventually lead to tooth decay and gum disease. Your dental hygienist will use special tools to remove any plaque and tartar from your teeth during your dental cleaning.

Pediatric Dental Sealants

A dental sealant is a plastic-like substance that is applied to the back molars to help prevent tooth decay in these hard-to-reach places. Studies have found that children with pediatric dental sealants experience an impressive 80% drop in tooth decay.

Professional Teeth Whitening

Were you ever let down by over-the-counter teeth whitening products like kits, trays or toothpaste? Although these at-home products may lighten the teeth a shade or two, they are no competition with professional methods. Also, getting a professional teeth whitening treatment means that you have someone to watch over you and protect your sensitive teeth and gums while your teeth are being whitened.

Dental Implants

Dentures and bridges have lost some of their popularity recently due to a surge in demand for dental implants. An implant is an artificial tooth that is firmly placed within the jawbone. So it cannot slip and cause problems like dentures sometimes can.

Dental implants also provide a long-lasting solution for one or more missing teeth. Unlike other tooth replacement treatment options that only last for around a decade, dental implants can be expected to last for a lifetime when properly cared for.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are a cosmetic dentistry procedure involving the placement of a thin porcelain shell over teeth to correct minor issues like chips, cracks or discoloration. They are normally placed over two dental visits. During the first, a small amount of tooth enamel must be removed to make room for the veneers. Temporary veneers may be placed at this time.

At your next appointment, your permanent porcelain veneers – which will have been created separately in a dental lab – are permanently placed over your teeth.
