A dental restoration corrects or replaces teeth that are missing or have parts of the tooth structure missing. You can be missing tooth structure because of tooth decay, a tooth fracture, or a previously placed restoration that has deteriorated. Some common examples of dental restorations are bridges, crowns, implants, veneers, and fillings.

Dental Bridges

We may recommend a bridge if you are missing one or more teeth. Having missing teeth can cause adjacent teeth to shift into the empty spaces and lead to a bad bite.

Bridges span the gap where your teeth are missing. We cement them to your natural teeth or to surrounding dental implants. These abutments form anchors for your dental bridge. A replacement tooth will be affixed to the crowns covering the abutments.

Although a dental bridge can last a lifetime, it is not uncommon for one to loosen or fall out. The best way to ensure that your bridge lasts for a long time is to practice sound oral hygiene. This makes it less likely that the bone or teeth holding your bridge in place undergoes damage. Be sure to keep up with your regular dental checkups and professional cleanings.

Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a “cap” that is shaped like a tooth and placed over it to provide a restoration for its shape, size, appearance and strength. A crown may also be used to ensure that a bridge remains in place or to cover an implant. In many cases, the size of the tooth must be reduced for the fitting of a crown.

Dental Implants

Dental implants have exploded in popularity in recent years among those seeking a superior treatment option for replacing one or more missing teeth. Strong and durable, implants provide both the look and feel of a natural tooth. Implants can be expected to last for the rest of your life when you care for them properly, just like you would for a natural tooth.

The implant itself consists of three components: a metal post, an abutment that is placed over the post, and finally a crown that is attached to the abutment. Implants are made from titanium – a strong metal that does not react to organic materials like those found in the mouth.

Porcelain Veneers

Are you unhappy with the appearance of your teeth due to minor imperfections like chips or stains? If so, you should consider getting porcelain veneers. Dental veneers are a type of thin shell that we place over your teeth to correct certain aesthetic issues. Porcelain makes an excellent choice for a veneer material since it is highly stain resistant and durable.

Receiving porcelain veneers normally takes place in two appointments. The first involves forming an impression of the teeth so that a mold can be created for the manufacture of your porcelain veneer. Once we receive your porcelain veneers back from the lab, we place them onto your teeth at a subsequent appointment.

Dental Fillings

Fillings are often used to correct tooth decay. Years ago, amalgam, or silver fillings, were popularly used for fillings. But now, patients can choose tooth-colored composite resin. This material offers patients with a more natural-looking result. Regardless of the preferred material, it is recommended to correct tooth decay as soon as possible. Left untreated, decay is known to cause infection and lead to tooth loss.
